Starting Over

Since my unfortunate layoff, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to start and grow my own business. I remember clearly the shock and fear that the layoff brought – “What am I going to do now?” and the tingle of excitement thinking, despite the adversity, that my options were limitless – I could put my things in storage and head to the Keys for months, work as a server or freelance writer, or move cross country to the heart of Silicon Valley. Ultimately, the job I’ve found myself in offers me the best of both worlds: the freedom that my temporary unemployment offered, and the flexibility to make my own schedule, build my own hours, and live and work where I want to, with the security of a steady paycheck.

Nothing is guaranteed, and I realize that, now more than ever, adding to my savings account has to take priority over shopping, dining out and nights out on the town, but for the time being, I’m enjoying the break from the business suits, long hours under fluorescent lights in a cubicle, walking out to my car in time to catch the last of the sunset and realizing what a beautiful day it HAD been while I was stuck in an office working.
