A Makeup Primer With A Jolt of Caffeine

Makeup primers are the latest craze in cosmetics. They are used to set makeup, fill lines and shrink pores, while absorbing oils to provide a smooth foundation and flawless finish – or so say their fancy packages.Unfortunately, even top end primers (I used to be a big fan of Dior’s until the sad realization hit that Dior makeup does not play nicely with breakout-prone skin) tend to be thick and sticky, which leaves your pores clogged and your skin begging for air (I’ve used primers that have made my skin shinier and sweatier than they were without using ANY primers).

When I came across Youthful Trends’ new makeup primer on SheBlogs, I was intrigued, but also incredibly skeptical. Caffeine and coffee-based products are also INCREDIBLY popular now (great tip that I’ll post about in greater detail separately – if you want to tone up quickly for an upcoming event or beach weekend – take used coffee grounds, rub them on your torso or thighs, wrap with plastic wrap, and sweat for an hour. I swear it works!), but finding your way through the forest of gimmicky products can be a challenge. But hey – samples available means I’m willing to check it out and sacrifice a good skin day for the sake of my readers.

Sooo…here goes:

I really like the product. Not only did it come in a spray bottle, which was surprising to me (I’m used to Dior’s cornstarch-esque paste that comes out of a tube), and was incredibly light – it didn’t have to be spackled on with a putty knife. It also didn’t leave me feeling like I was wearing 5 lbs of makeup. Did it work for keeping my makeup on? Yes – I noticed a significant difference even when applying really light amounts of makeup for every day wear, and definitely saw a difference when applying makeup for evening.

With a $29.99 price tag, the product is definitely worth having on your shelf, especially if you live in an area with warm or humid climate.

While I didn’t have a chance to road test for all of these items, it’s worth noting the company’s marketing pitch, because their studies speak far more than my one week road test:

Youthful Trends brand makeup primer is made from a distilled water base with vegetable glycerin, natural botanicals and caffeine. Studies show caffeine tightens lines, reduces bulging pores, and protects skin from UV damage, but Youthful Trends primer does so much more. The non-sticky natural base smoothes skin while increasing permeability, which allows pores to breathe beneath any cosmetic foundation. While most makeup primers are manufactured as serums, creams or powders, Youthful Trends is an atomized spray that allows users to easily apply the product with any makeup regimen. Unlike sticky primers, this water based spray dries evenly while hydrating skin and absorbing excess oils. Youthful Trends primer also reduces facial sweating and protects skin to keep makeup looking beautiful all day long. This exclusive formula works for all skin types and colors, as well as all types of makeup including mineral powders, creams and liquids.

For more information visit www.YouthfulTrends.com.

Bodycology Beauty

I’m someone with super sensitive skin. Give me a lotion with the wrong kind of fragrance, and I’ll look like I have the chicken pox for 2 hours or longer after hastily scrubbing it off (hives are NEVER in season). Same goes for soaps, laundry detergents, pretty much anything I put on my skin or on the clothing that will come in contact with my skin. So, when I had the chance to review Bodycology’s products, I was a bit hesitant to try something new – but I’m glad I did.

Not only did the products work (I road tested their gardenia body lotion and body wash, and their vanilla sugar hand soap) without giving me a rash, but they also had a great, comfortable smell to them that lasted long after I used them. Even the hand soap had a smell that lingered for (no exaggeration) hours.

I’ve written in the past about my issue with skin lotions in South Florida (it’s so hot and humid that most lotions leave my skin feeling greasy or actually make me sweat more, and light lotions still manage to leave my skin dry and itchy). Bodycology’s lotion did neither. My skin did feel much softer after about 4 – 5 days of regular use, the lotion soaked into the skin rather than sitting on top, and it had a very pleasant but not overpowering smell.

With a reasonable price tag (a large tube of their lotion runs about $18, and a 4-pack of their body washes can be had on Amazon for $15.50), great effectiveness and an awesome line of scents to suit any personality – from bold and fruity to flirty and flowery, these products definitely fall into the Must Have category for your beauty chest.

Drew Barrymore’s “$25 Red Carpet”?

Drew Barrymore made an appearance on the red carpet for the Nylon magazine/Express party this week in Los Angeles wearing a $25 metallic-printed, 3/4-sleeve shift dress that she picked up at an Austin, TX thrift store, turning heads and gaining national press for her budget ensemble.

The dress is striking, and it’s a win for budget-conscious fashionistas everywhere, proving that the coveted red carpet, celebrity style we all crave doesn’t have to come with a four-figure price tag. However, as a shoe addict, I couldn’t help but notice the stylist pumps rounding off her chic look – Yves Saint Laurent “Tribute” pumps – with a price tag of $760.

Thrift store finds are a great way to boost your wardrobe without killing your budget. Personally, I once found a fantastic Ralph Lauren collection gown at a thrift store off Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. The VERY pricey gown – a backless, strappy bronze silk number with a floating skirt that just looked amazing – had a whopping $25 price tag at the vintage shop, and 8 years later, it’s still in style.

Finding fabulous footwear at thrift store prices can be a bigger challenge, though. Thrift store shoes, even the highest-end shops, rarely have the kinds of funky footwear that I love. My secret? eBay. Cheesy as it sounds, whether I’m scoping a paid of designer knock-offs or a one of a kind pair of stilettos for an upcoming event, I can always find what I’m looking for on eBay. And since I’m so rough on shoes (I swear, I will kill the nubs on my heels after only a few days of wearing them – whether I spend $20 or $200 on them), it’s a great way to build a collection of shoes that’s sure to impress, without breaking the bank.

Sprinkles Cake Shooters – DE-licious

From the land of talking mice and a wonderland of theme parks comes the latest indulgence that’s ideal for children of any age: Sprinkles Cake Shooters. These portable, practical push-pops full of the perfect ratio of moist, delicious cake and creamy, decadent frosting are perfect for children’s events – their plastic tube encasement with push up handle makes them a cleaner, more practical alternative to the cupcake, and their layered frosting-and-cake structure ensures that you won’t wind up with dry bites at the bottom of your dessert. However, for us ladies on the go, these pops won’t leave your fingers sticky and don’t require a napkin.

I had the opportunity to sample these great snacks, thanks to the great people at Sprinkles Custom Cakes, based in Orlando, FL, who sent an assortment for my husband and I to sample. I’m a fussy dessert eater – I hate dry cakes, and I’ve developed a system for eating slices of cake so that I don’t wind up with too much, or too little frosting on each bite. That said, I was thoroughly pleased with the package that arrived at my condo this last week, and my husband and I quickly got to work reviewing our samples, making our way through the 6 pops that we had to choose from.

Looking at the overall aesthetic of the pops, while they are great for children’s events – birthdays, summer picnics or family reunions – they’re also very attractive for grown-up get togethers – from birthdays to cocktail parties, holiday parties or family get-togethers. The one thing I’d be curious to see is how to best display these tasty treats – since they have very narrow handle bases that prevent them from standing on their own. As a creative type, I can see a number of solutions, from decorated blocks of styrofoam to vases, depending on the number you order.

Right now, Sprinkles offers four flavors of cake shooters:

*Yellow Raspberry Swirl: swirled into the mix are cream cheese filling and icing
*Piña Colada: taste the tropics with this mix of vanilla Bavarian cream, pineapple filling, coconut filling and icing
*OMG: that’s what you’ll be saying when you put this delicious combination of raspberry swirl and chocolate buttercream icing
*Sprinkles Signature: this classic creation features vanilla Bavarian cream and white icing

Don’t live in Florida? Don’t worry! Sprinkles ships their cakes nationwide via 2nd Day Air, and they arrive with freeze packs to ensure that your frosting doesn’t melt and that your cake doesn’t spoil. The cake shooters are also comparably priced with gourmet cupcake bakeries – costing $3 for an individual shooter and $36 for a bakers’ dozen.

The cakery is open for orders Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 5: p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information or to order your own cake shooters (or cupcakes, or custom cakes), visit www.sprinklescakes.net.

Disclosure: I received a sample package of cake shooters to taste and review, but was not compensated in any other way. The thoughts expressed in this review are mine and mine alone.

Guilty Pleasures: Cheesecake Factory

I’m not typically one for chain restaurants – many offer high-priced versions of “fast food” that is frozen, never fresh, and shipped from some centralized warehouse all in the name of living up to corporate standards (read: making sure that corporate can take the franchisee for every penny they can – insisting that the veggies and meats they use MUST come from their suppliers instead of from the local farms). I also like to support independent restaurants and enjoy the creative, and often more daring, dishes they offer. However, there is one guilty pleasure I’m not afraid to admit: Cheesecake Factory.

I’ve been going to the Cheesecake Factory for several years. My first experience was the location in Coco Grove, and since then I’ve eaten at about a half dozen locations around the country. I am a HUGE cheesecake fanatic, so looking over a menu (or dessert case) with more than 40 types of cheesecake is pure evil (there’s always that voice in the back of my head, when I can’t decide, that says “Life is short, order two.”).

Last night, hubby and I went to the West Palm Beach/City Place location, and tried to convince ourselves we weren’t being total gluttons by ordering healthy entrees (which, BTW, Cheesecase Factory has a LOT of).

As an appetizer, and the meal I typically order, we shared the Thai Lettuce Wraps – an amazingly healthy and fresh combination of chicken satay, cold noodles, sprouts, cucumbers and carrots with Boston lettuce leaves as wraps and a variety of dipping sauces to finish the dish. If you’ve never tried this dish – do it. Not only is it an ideal, mostly cold (the chicken is hot) dish that’s perfect for 90 degree Florida weather, but it’s so healthy that you can actually feel your body thanking you as you’re eating it (or at least, mine does, since my diet typically consists of fatty, creamy sauces over all kinds of heavy meats).

The plate is ENORMOUS, and we both wound up filling up on the appetizer alone, and opted to have our meals wrapped for lunch today and order dessert instead. However, the Boston House Salad that I ordered as my entree (I have to justify the mountain of cheesecake somehow), which comes with boston lettuce, bacon, hardboiled egg, bleu cheese crumbles and ranch bleu cheese dressing (I always sub out) is a protein-rich but healthy dinner, and when you ask for extra veggies, from tomatoes to cukes, you’re sure to have your full servings of veggies for the day.

Onto the grand finale – cheesecake. Honestly, my favorite cheesecake is the original. I love its simplicity and taste, and the texture of the rich, dense cheesecake filling isn’t masked with candy bar crumbles or other flavors. However, last night I went for the 30th Anniversary Cheesecake: the original layered with rich chocolate ganache and chocolate cake, and it was worth every calorie.

Trade Secrets From The Cosmetics Counter

Found this article on AOL Careers by Jennifer Tinsley and thought it was worth sharing. Enjoy!

I have worked at a cosmetics counter at Macy’s for four years and I have some secrets to share! Use them to be a more savvy shopper on your next trip to the department store.

1. Be wary of the make-up brushes.

Yes, we are supposed to wash and sanitize the make-up brushes daily, but more often than not we don’t. I’ve contracted multiple eye infections from using the brushes at the counter. Opt for the disposable cotton balls and swabs instead, even if they aren’t the best tool for applying the product you’re interested in.

2. We accept all returns.

The sales associate at the counter may deny this policy because they do not want to take a hit on their commission, however our policy is that we do accept returns within 90 days of purchase with or without a receipt. All you need to do is kindly ask for the manager on duty. Do not feel bad about doing this; it’s your right as a consumer.

3. You do not need toner or lip liner.

These are add-on items. They benefit sales associates who work on commission more than they do your skin or make-up routine. People with extremely oily skin can use a toner, but for most customers it’s extraneous. As for lip liner, can you really tell the difference if someone is wearing it? Really? Take it from me, save your twenty dollars.

4. Sorry, we tell everyone they look beautiful.

And you very well may be beautiful, but we say it to all of our customers, hoping they will buy everything that we just used on them. Best advice: bring along a friend who is honest and not biased by the promise of a fatter paycheck.

5. Department store vs. drugstore: Which is better?

Drugstore beauty products have come a very long way, but there are still some things that are hands-down better quality at a department store.

Personally, I would buy lip gloss, lipstick, eyeshadow, blush and mascara at the drugstore and save some money. The one thing that I will pay extra money for is higher end foundation. I haven’t found a drugstore brand that compares in terms of color match, finished look and how it wears.

With skin care I can go either way. You don’t need to pay a fortune but you do need to look for basic ingredients, such as vitamin C, sun protection and an anti-ager.

6. Try before you buy.

Ask for a sample before you invest in the product. We may not always have them, but it’s worth asking.

Romantic Recipes: Chicken Saltambocca

Ingredients

  • 8 (3-ounce) chicken cutlets/tenderloins, pounded to evenly flatten
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 6 paper-thin slices prosciutto
  • 1 (10-ounce) box frozen chopped spinach, thawed
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan
  • 1 (14-ounce) can low-salt chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Place the chicken cutlets flat on the work surface. Sprinkle the chicken with salt and pepper. Lay 1 slice of prosciutto atop each chicken cutlet.

Squeeze the frozen spinach to remove the excess water. Season the spinach with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, toss the spinach with 1 tablespoon of oil to coat.

Arrange an even, thin layer of spinach atop the prosciutto slices. Sprinkle the Parmesan evenly over each. Beginning at the short tapered end, roll up each chicken cutlet as for a jellyroll. Secure with a toothpick.

Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy large skillet over high heat. Add the chicken and cook just until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Add the chicken broth and lemon juice, and scrape the browned bits off the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Bring the liquid to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium. Cover and simmer until the chicken is just cooked through, about 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a platter. Simmer the cooking liquid over high heat until it is reduced to about 2/3 cup, about 5 minutes. Season the cooking liquid with salt and pepper, to taste. Remove toothpicks from the chicken. Drizzle the reduced cooking liquid over the chicken and serve immediately.

Serve with lemon-poached asparagus for an easy and quick side, or opt for a fettuccine alfredo for a more indulgent side dish.

Sushi & Sake 101 At SUSHISAMBA

I try to vary the types of posts that you’ll see on I’m No June Cleaver, but today I got a press release that I just couldn’t pass up blogging about. Just on the coattails of my review of Sushi Jo, I received this exciting news from a PR pro for SUSHISAMBA – with locations in NYC, Miami Beach, Chicago and elsewhere: the restaurant will be hosting sushi & sake classes on Wednesday nights! From their release:

SUSHISAMBA’s expansive sake menu is the largest in South Florida, boasting nearly 50 varieties of the rice-based spirit. Beverage expert Parks will touch on a variety of the sakes available at the restaurant; beginning the course with an introduction to the traditions and history of sake followed by a lesson in sake pairings.

Students are then treated to SUSHISAMBA’s history lesson on sushi and an in-depth instruction on the selecting and cutting of raw fish. Following the tutorial, students can put to practice their lessons by creating their own custom sushi roll.

Sushi & Sake classes will be held bi-monthly on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The two-hour class offers an educational experience, which includes five flights of sake and a sushi sampler platter for the reasonable price of $75 per person (tax and gratuity not included). Classes will begin Wednesday August 11, 2010.

I’m hoping I’ll have a chance to review this class, as I absolutely adore attending cooking classes that offer tricks to creative and elegant cuisine, and sushi is an area I have yet to add to my culinary repertoire, admittedly for fear of knowing little about how to pick and cut the raw fish (and I’d be mortified if my roll came out looking like a lumpy mess).

For Floridians who are looking for a fun, educational evening (or a great date night – stay tuned for my upcoming series on clever and classy date spots in South Florida – coming soon!), this is definitely a class that sounds worthwhile.

To reserve a space for one of the upcoming classes or to learn more, please call SUSHISAMBA dromo at 305.673.5337.
