Seeing Red: Louboutin Loses Trademark Its Signature Soles

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery…unless it’s in the business arena. Yesterday, infamous French footwear designer Christian Louboutin lost a suit attempting to protect its trademark red outsoles. Specifically – the designer was protecting the use of Pantone 18 (Chinese Red) in outsoles – a color that has become synonymous with his brand since it was introduced in 1992.

Competitor Yves St. Laurent sparked the suit in question, as they prepare to feature red-soled stilettos in their Fall 2011 collection. Louboutin retaliated by taking the rival to court, citing 2008 trademark protection for the coloring of its soles.

If your schedule has been anything like mine the past few months, you’re likely packing your bags for the long weekend without technology (I personally plan on putting away the laptop, PDAs, cell phone, and all other communication devices so that I can take in some legitimate R&R). And, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be waiting until Thursday evening to toss together your suitcase for the weekend – which will inevitably result in a strange combination of over- and under- packing (forgetting your sassy new stilettos and toothbrush while packing 4 pair of PJs…what was I thinking??).

Being 30 has its challenges, fashion-wise. I don’t feel old, by any means, but shopping in the Juniors department means that I’m going to be faced with ill-fitting clothing (designed for teens with no bust or hips) that increasingly looks way too “young” for me. However, shopping in the Misses department often leaves me with overly plain, frumpy clothing that I’d imagine my mother wearing.

Body Wrap Shapewear Is Red Hot This Winter

Now that I’ve hit the big 3-0, despite my best efforts at keeping fit, my figure isn’t what it was when I was 22 (I’m also not a size 2 anymore, although I’m getting used to my size 6/8 frame, just not some of the lumps and bumps that go with it). I still love to dress to the 9s, especially when I’m going out on the town. I love the slim-fitting cocktail dresses that hug curves and show off your assets, but those dresses can also expose every figure flaw I have.
