From Fashion To Facebook, Macy’s Celebrates Seventh Year As National Sponsor Of American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® Movement

This February, everyone across the country will have the opportunity to show their true colors as they make it their mission to fight women’s heart disease on National Wear Red Day - Friday, February 4th.  As the kick-off to American Heart Month, shoppers and supporters can adorn themselves in shades of red and demonstrate heartfelt support for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement.  This year, Macy’s is celebrating seven years as national sponsor of Go Red For Women with exclusive designer fashion, shopping promotions, special in-store events and a whole-hearted campaign with Facebook dedicated to raising funds for the AHA and increasing awareness among women and their loved ones.

“At Macy’s, we stay committed to the cause, and take our role as national sponsor of the Go Red movement to heart.  From the in-store experience with exclusive fashions and events to social media campaigns, we are always striving for fresh and innovative ways to raise funds, and to motivate and educate our customers and associates in the importance of heart-healthy lifestyles,” says Martine Reardon, executive vice president of Marketing, Macy’s, Inc.  “Seven years and counting, we have raised over $24 million for the American Heart Association, helping to fund their life-saving research and raising awareness amongst women of this life-threatening disease.”

“Less than 1 percent of the U.S. population has ideal cardiovascular health as defined by the American Heart Association, and the effects of heart disease leave millions of lives in peril,” said Debra Lockwood, American Heart Association Board Chairman and executive vice president and CFO, Provident Resources Group, Inc. “With Macy’s support, the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women are uniquely positioned to help educate the public on how to improve their heart health. We’re thankful that Macy’s backs its commitment by generously supporting Go Red For Women, a vital movement that helps save women’s lives from the devastation of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women.”

For a more formal affair, INC’s “Go Red” dress, designed by Season Six Project Runway winner, Irina Shabayeva, is a flirty, fitted silhouette in a seductive shade of red that simply screams romance.

Donatella, Kipling, and August Silk are also joining the cause by donating a portion of the proceeds from special “Go Red” items to the American Heart Association. Available at select Macy’s and on macys.com, the Go Red merchandise will retail from $29 to $99 with up to 10% of the sale of each item being donated to the American Heart Association (details available in-store and on macys.com during the month of February). Now there’s no excuse not to go red!

Heart to Heart – Go Red CONNECT Events
The American Heart Association and select Macy’s stores across the country are inviting women to special “Go Red CONNECT” events to share the choices they make to live a heart-healthy lifestyle, empowering others by example.  Women who share their stories have the chance to become a spokesperson for the cause – representing Go Red For Women in marketing materials, at events, and on GoRedForWomen.org.

The National Launch event will take place at Macy’s Herald Square on Friday, February 4 with Go Red For Women celebrity spokesperson Cheryl Hines.  Additional Go Red CONNECT events will be held in many cities across the country. These in-store events will take place throughout the weekend of February 4th – 6th, and the month of February. To find a Go Red CONNECT event in your area and view the most up-to-date list of cities, please visit GoRedForWomen.org.

And the Beat Goes On – Go Red For Women Multicultural Fund
Macy’s has helped the American Heart Association bring awareness to this movement that speaks directly to women of diverse cultures and ethnicities, as Macy’s is also the national sponsor of Go Red Por Tu Corazon.  Additionally, in 2008, the Macy’s Go Red For Women Multicultural Fund was created to specifically educate, promote and distribute good heart-health information to African American and Hispanic women.  The Fund’s goal is to reach these women through broadcast and print vehicles, as well as support education through the Multicultural Scholarship Fund.  To date, Go Red For Women and Macy’s have partnered with Selecciones magazine, Word Network TV and Radio One Inc. to produce grass roots events, public service announcements and literature to inform their respective audiences.

Drew Barrymore’s “$25 Red Carpet”?

Drew Barrymore made an appearance on the red carpet for the Nylon magazine/Express party this week in Los Angeles wearing a $25 metallic-printed, 3/4-sleeve shift dress that she picked up at an Austin, TX thrift store, turning heads and gaining national press for her budget ensemble.

The dress is striking, and it’s a win for budget-conscious fashionistas everywhere, proving that the coveted red carpet, celebrity style we all crave doesn’t have to come with a four-figure price tag. However, as a shoe addict, I couldn’t help but notice the stylist pumps rounding off her chic look – Yves Saint Laurent “Tribute” pumps – with a price tag of $760.

Thrift store finds are a great way to boost your wardrobe without killing your budget. Personally, I once found a fantastic Ralph Lauren collection gown at a thrift store off Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. The VERY pricey gown – a backless, strappy bronze silk number with a floating skirt that just looked amazing – had a whopping $25 price tag at the vintage shop, and 8 years later, it’s still in style.

Finding fabulous footwear at thrift store prices can be a bigger challenge, though. Thrift store shoes, even the highest-end shops, rarely have the kinds of funky footwear that I love. My secret? eBay. Cheesy as it sounds, whether I’m scoping a paid of designer knock-offs or a one of a kind pair of stilettos for an upcoming event, I can always find what I’m looking for on eBay. And since I’m so rough on shoes (I swear, I will kill the nubs on my heels after only a few days of wearing them – whether I spend $20 or $200 on them), it’s a great way to build a collection of shoes that’s sure to impress, without breaking the bank.
