South Florida Eats: Racks Downtown Eatery, Boca Raton

Racks Downtown Eatery in Mizner Park had the potential to be a great hidden gem in Boca Raton, and I was looking forward to writing a great review of the restaurant. From the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted by a happy, friendly hostess and a clean, modern-looking restaurant with raw bar, pizza oven and indoor/outdoor bar that was quickly filling up for what I later found was Happy Hour.

For those who aren’t aware, I’m less than a week away from “D-Day” and my son’s arrival, so I look like I’m carrying a soccer ball around my waist when I do motivate myself to get dressed and venture out into the South Florida heat and humidity to get a bite to eat (the poor hubby has been tasked with more deliver orders than I care to outline in the past month). I’m also dealing with the myriad of late-pregnancy pains that moms-to-be look forward to: back pain, swollen joints, and general aches. This is all important to my overall restaurant impression, which is why I spell it out up front.

Soulja Boy Takes Over Macy’s Broward Mall This Weekend

I’ve always been fascinated by hip hop artists. They may be the only high-profile professionals who find it (and aren’t called out on it) perfectly acceptable to bring their entire posse to work with them – and give them random, odd jobs (or none at all). Soulja Boy is no different. The rapper made an appearance at Broward Mall’s Macy’s as part of the Macy’s mstyle Lab Concert Tour today, full posse in tow. While most of the posse did nothing more than stand on stage (and block our photographers), Boy’s little brother kept things interesting by kicking moves with his brother on stage.

Seeing Red: Louboutin Loses Trademark Its Signature Soles

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery…unless it’s in the business arena. Yesterday, infamous French footwear designer Christian Louboutin lost a suit attempting to protect its trademark red outsoles. Specifically – the designer was protecting the use of Pantone 18 (Chinese Red) in outsoles – a color that has become synonymous with his brand since it was introduced in 1992.

Competitor Yves St. Laurent sparked the suit in question, as they prepare to feature red-soled stilettos in their Fall 2011 collection. Louboutin retaliated by taking the rival to court, citing 2008 trademark protection for the coloring of its soles.

Twenty-Five Years Later, Baby Is Back Out Of The Corner

Following in the popularity of such dance flicks as High School Musical and Glee (and following the announcement of the planned remake of Footloose), Lionsgate has announced that it will be remaking the 1987 dance classic, “Dirty Dancing.”

While no casting decisions have been publicly made, Kenny Ortega has been slated to direct the remake. Of all the potential contenders, Ortega may be the best choice to keep the film true to its original roots – as he was the choreographer responsible for all those dirty moves that had us practicing our dance steps in front of the TV set (you know who you are out there…I certainly know I’m guilty).

New Series: Home Makeovers 101

The last month has been a whirlwind of activity for my husband and I. After more than a year and a half of searching, we finally found our dream home – and after four months of debate back and forth, we finally closed on the house in mid-July (hip-hip, hooray!). Since then, life has been one giant scramble of packing, moving, unpacking, cleaning, and decorating, with some cooking, working and OB visits thrown in to keep life interesting.

One of the first and obvious joys of home ownership is the ability to renovate, decorate, and actually PAINT rooms of your home the way you want them. One of the first and obvious pains of home ownership, on the flip side, is the inevitable list of things that will go wrong as soon as you move into your home, that will keep you sinking money into your brand new Money Pit for decades to come.

South Beach Style: The Sanctuary

South Beach means many different things to many different people. To out-of-towners, South Beach is a melting pot and fashion mecca, home to celebrities like Madonna and Sly Stallone and destination spot for the rich and famous. For those guests – SoBe carries an aura of the exotic – appealing, attractive, and a place to be. For Floridians, South Beach is something entirely different – overpriced, touristy, pretentious and – unless you’re staying at one of the many overpriced mega-resorts like the Mondrian or Fountainbleu, incredibly underwhelming in terms of lodgings.

American Standard – Green Just Got A Little Classier

Continuing along my event recap, another brand I really enjoyed learning more about last weekend was American Standard Brands, makers of a variety of high-end kitchen and bath fixtures. While I didn’t want to jinx myself, I was particularly interested in their products for 2 reasons: 1. Hubby and I are waiting on the final word for the starter house of our dreams (loan approved pending some small fixes the bank will have to make) and with 2 small bathrooms in the house, I’d love to be able to come up with some creative makeover options to maximize space and give the rooms a modern, sleek look (no master bathroom suite in this house, unfortunately), and 2. The company featured one of their FunBath bathtubs for young kids, which immediately piqued this pregnant mommy-to-be’s attention.

Pirates IV Hits Its Audiences’ Mark

Executives at Disney have devised a formula for the second set of Pirates films that truly hits their audiences right where they want it. Namely, that formula is – put Johnny Depp, in costume, on the big screen for as long as possible to please fans (like this one) who are going to see exactly that. This is comical, considering how resistant the team was to Depp’s interpretation of Sparrow in the first film, which was all about hot-for-a-minute Orlando Bloom (who was completely written out of IV) with Sparrow as a minor character.
