This Mother’s Day, Just Say No

A few years ago, I started having some “women’s problems.” After the scariest series of misdiagnoses that left me wondering what the hell the Florida health system was all about, I was told that I’d likely have a hard time with any pregnancies because of uterine fibroids and unusual vascularization that was causing me tremendous pain and bleeding.

Fast forward to St. Patrick’s Day, 2011. After feeling sick for several days and spending more time in the bathroom than I ever have, I decided to get a pregnancy test. My husband and I weren’t planing a baby, but I had ruled out other possibilities. What I got was the best surprise I could have wished for: I was expecting.

What Arizona’s HB 2800 REALLY Means For Arizonans

Following up on my letter to Arizona’s Governor Brewer, I received several emails and comments from readers who pointed out the obvious – Planned Parenthood offers services that extend far beyond abortions. Just how many services and what percentages these services make up set me back to the drawing board for this post, which outlines what Arizona’s HB 2800 will really mean for the voters that elected Governor Brewer – and what similar bills could mean for your state’s women.

Summer Slim-Down Tips From Steve Siebold

Summer starts in less than two months, but fun in the sun isn’t the plan for the millions of Americans embarrassed by those extra pounds. Celebrity mental toughness coach Steve Siebold, author of the book Die Fat or Get Tough; 101 Differences in Thinking Between Fat People and Fit People, says there’s still enough time to look good in that bathing suit or bikini, and it starts with a little bit of tough love.

SpaWeek Deals For Mother’s Day

As a new Mom, I am an expert on the fatigue, aches, pains and lack of time for personal hygeine (remember the days when we got to shower on a daily basis and actually style our hair?) that comes with the first year of motherhood. For Moms like me, who don’t have regular childcare and who don’t have family nearby, it’s absolutely imperative to find a few hours for ourselves to feel pampered, relax, and refresh after long hard weeks or months of 24/7 work. That’s why this email stood out to me.

Hitting The Point Of Burnout

My typical day starts at about 7 am. My husband takes the early shift with Baby A since I take the late shift and most overnight feedings (not to mention, he’s much more of a morning person than I am). At 7, before I get out of bed, I check emails and text messages in five different email accounts, answer those most urgent, then get out of bed to take over morning feeding and playtime so that my husband can hop in the shower and head off to work.

After he leaves, I play with my son for about an hour before he’s ready for his first nap (when, that is, he’s willing to take a nap). During that 30 – 45 minute period, I run around and try to get the house straightened out, answer the emails, texts, Tweets and posts that have come through in the morning, and hopefully drink a cup of coffee before my son wakes up. If I’m lucky, I get to hop in the shower.

The Happiest Time of the Year?

Life Coach Gives Tips for Surviving Less Than Perfect Holidays

For all the promise of joy, peace and harmony that comes with the holiday season, the reality for millions of people is that the season is anything but a celebration. For many, it’s a reminder of lost loved ones, personal disappointments and dreams left unfulfilled.

But for life coach Teri Johnson, whose personal journey through an imperfect life now inspires others to reach for the lives they’ve always wanted, the negative “nevers” of the disappointing hand life may have dealt you is where the healing starts. By confronting a never-ending and unproductive cycle of negativity, the elusive joy of the holiday season can be found not just now but every day of the year, says Johnson, author of the newly released book, Overcoming the Nevers (www.overcomingthenevers.com).

Life After Heart Failure

I almost died today. No, really, I know that sounds like the overly-dramatic opening to some tear-jerker chick flick, but in this case, it’s true. The sentence has been floating around in my head for the last 24 hours, not seeming any more real with each passing repetition. Just last night, I was cuddling with my newborn son, feeling completely whole emotionally, albeit exhausted, worn, and like a wet rag. And today, I’m surrounded by doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals jabbing me with needles, hooking me up to countless machines and telling me how lucky I am to have come to the hospital when I did.

I’m A Mom!

At 8:28 pm last night, I gave birth to a happy, healthy, humongous baby boy. He weighed in at 9 lbs, 7 oz, measured 22 inches in length, and scored a 9 on his Apgar tests. Kiddo is a tank – eating voraciously and wearing the 6 month onesies instead of newborn size clothing. I never understood what love at first sight meant – until now. I am utterly, completely, totally in love with this little bundle, and I cannot describe the many sensations that come with new motherhood – from the feeling you get the first time baby nuzzles in close and you realize that he’s completely trusting of you and counting on you to keep him, to the feeling you get the first time he opens his tiny little eyes and you get to meet, face-to-face, that tiny little stranger who’s been kicking inside you for 9 months.

Topricin Offers Pregnancy Pain Relief

Pregnancy has its ups and downs. Now well into my second trimester, I’ve felt the joys of kicks, seen my baby loud and clear on an ultrasound and started the nesting process. I’ve also seen my wardrobe shrink, lost sight of my toes and I’ve lost my ability to slip into any of my pumps (I’m living in flip flops now).
