From the land of talking mice and a wonderland of theme parks comes the latest indulgence that’s ideal for children of any age: Sprinkles Cake Shooters. These portable, practical push-pops full of the perfect ratio of moist, delicious cake and creamy, decadent frosting are perfect for children’s events – their plastic tube encasement with push up handle makes them a cleaner, more practical alternative to the cupcake, and their layered frosting-and-cake structure ensures that you won’t wind up with dry bites at the bottom of your dessert. However, for us ladies on the go, these pops won’t leave your fingers sticky and don’t require a napkin.
I had the opportunity to sample these great snacks, thanks to the great people at Sprinkles Custom Cakes, based in Orlando, FL, who sent an assortment for my husband and I to sample. I’m a fussy dessert eater – I hate dry cakes, and I’ve developed a system for eating slices of cake so that I don’t wind up with too much, or too little frosting on each bite. That said, I was thoroughly pleased with the package that arrived at my condo this last week, and my husband and I quickly got to work reviewing our samples, making our way through the 6 pops that we had to choose from.
Looking at the overall aesthetic of the pops, while they are great for children’s events – birthdays, summer picnics or family reunions – they’re also very attractive for grown-up get togethers – from birthdays to cocktail parties, holiday parties or family get-togethers. The one thing I’d be curious to see is how to best display these tasty treats – since they have very narrow handle bases that prevent them from standing on their own. As a creative type, I can see a number of solutions, from decorated blocks of styrofoam to vases, depending on the number you order.
Right now, Sprinkles offers four flavors of cake shooters:
*Yellow Raspberry Swirl: swirled into the mix are cream cheese filling and icing
*Piña Colada: taste the tropics with this mix of vanilla Bavarian cream, pineapple filling, coconut filling and icing
*OMG: that’s what you’ll be saying when you put this delicious combination of raspberry swirl and chocolate buttercream icing
*Sprinkles Signature: this classic creation features vanilla Bavarian cream and white icing
Don’t live in Florida? Don’t worry! Sprinkles ships their cakes nationwide via 2nd Day Air, and they arrive with freeze packs to ensure that your frosting doesn’t melt and that your cake doesn’t spoil. The cake shooters are also comparably priced with gourmet cupcake bakeries – costing $3 for an individual shooter and $36 for a bakers’ dozen.
The cakery is open for orders Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 5: p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information or to order your own cake shooters (or cupcakes, or custom cakes), visit www.sprinklescakes.net.
Disclosure: I received a sample package of cake shooters to taste and review, but was not compensated in any other way. The thoughts expressed in this review are mine and mine alone.
