Hilarious Gifts For The Man In Your Life This Holiday Season

When it comes to shopping for holiday gifts for my husband, he’s into “anything electronic.” Computers, televisions, gadgets and gizmos – he’s got a million reasons why each and every one will enrich our lives (it’s TECHNOLOGY, Junie!). However, sometimes he needs to get into something a bit less hi-tech…and trying to get him to read a book is, well, painful. When I received this round up of holiday titles for the men in our lives, I just had to share them. Which one is your husband?

A Makeup Primer With A Jolt of Caffeine

Makeup primers are the latest craze in cosmetics. They are used to set makeup, fill lines and shrink pores, while absorbing oils to provide a smooth foundation and flawless finish – or so say their fancy packages.Unfortunately, even top end primers (I used to be a big fan of Dior’s until the sad realization hit that Dior makeup does not play nicely with breakout-prone skin) tend to be thick and sticky, which leaves your pores clogged and your skin begging for air (I’ve used primers that have made my skin shinier and sweatier than they were without using ANY primers).

When I came across Youthful Trends’ new makeup primer on SheBlogs, I was intrigued, but also incredibly skeptical. Caffeine and coffee-based products are also INCREDIBLY popular now (great tip that I’ll post about in greater detail separately – if you want to tone up quickly for an upcoming event or beach weekend – take used coffee grounds, rub them on your torso or thighs, wrap with plastic wrap, and sweat for an hour. I swear it works!), but finding your way through the forest of gimmicky products can be a challenge. But hey – samples available means I’m willing to check it out and sacrifice a good skin day for the sake of my readers.

Sooo…here goes:

I really like the product. Not only did it come in a spray bottle, which was surprising to me (I’m used to Dior’s cornstarch-esque paste that comes out of a tube), and was incredibly light – it didn’t have to be spackled on with a putty knife. It also didn’t leave me feeling like I was wearing 5 lbs of makeup. Did it work for keeping my makeup on? Yes – I noticed a significant difference even when applying really light amounts of makeup for every day wear, and definitely saw a difference when applying makeup for evening.

With a $29.99 price tag, the product is definitely worth having on your shelf, especially if you live in an area with warm or humid climate.

While I didn’t have a chance to road test for all of these items, it’s worth noting the company’s marketing pitch, because their studies speak far more than my one week road test:

Youthful Trends brand makeup primer is made from a distilled water base with vegetable glycerin, natural botanicals and caffeine. Studies show caffeine tightens lines, reduces bulging pores, and protects skin from UV damage, but Youthful Trends primer does so much more. The non-sticky natural base smoothes skin while increasing permeability, which allows pores to breathe beneath any cosmetic foundation. While most makeup primers are manufactured as serums, creams or powders, Youthful Trends is an atomized spray that allows users to easily apply the product with any makeup regimen. Unlike sticky primers, this water based spray dries evenly while hydrating skin and absorbing excess oils. Youthful Trends primer also reduces facial sweating and protects skin to keep makeup looking beautiful all day long. This exclusive formula works for all skin types and colors, as well as all types of makeup including mineral powders, creams and liquids.

For more information visit www.YouthfulTrends.com.

Disclaimer: I received a sample of Youthful Trends Makeup Primer for a one week review/road test. The opinions expressed in my review are mine and mine alone, and I was not provided with any additional compensation.

Bodycology Beauty

I’m someone with super sensitive skin. Give me a lotion with the wrong kind of fragrance, and I’ll look like I have the chicken pox for 2 hours or longer after hastily scrubbing it off (hives are NEVER in season). Same goes for soaps, laundry detergents, pretty much anything I put on my skin or on the clothing that will come in contact with my skin. So, when I had the chance to review Bodycology’s products, I was a bit hesitant to try something new – but I’m glad I did.

Not only did the products work (I road tested their gardenia body lotion and body wash, and their vanilla sugar hand soap) without giving me a rash, but they also had a great, comfortable smell to them that lasted long after I used them. Even the hand soap had a smell that lingered for (no exaggeration) hours.

I’ve written in the past about my issue with skin lotions in South Florida (it’s so hot and humid that most lotions leave my skin feeling greasy or actually make me sweat more, and light lotions still manage to leave my skin dry and itchy). Bodycology’s lotion did neither. My skin did feel much softer after about 4 – 5 days of regular use, the lotion soaked into the skin rather than sitting on top, and it had a very pleasant but not overpowering smell.

With a reasonable price tag (a large tube of their lotion runs about $18, and a 4-pack of their body washes can be had on Amazon for $15.50), great effectiveness and an awesome line of scents to suit any personality – from bold and fruity to flirty and flowery, these products definitely fall into the Must Have category for your beauty chest.

Sprinkles Cake Shooters – DE-licious

From the land of talking mice and a wonderland of theme parks comes the latest indulgence that’s ideal for children of any age: Sprinkles Cake Shooters. These portable, practical push-pops full of the perfect ratio of moist, delicious cake and creamy, decadent frosting are perfect for children’s events – their plastic tube encasement with push up handle makes them a cleaner, more practical alternative to the cupcake, and their layered frosting-and-cake structure ensures that you won’t wind up with dry bites at the bottom of your dessert. However, for us ladies on the go, these pops won’t leave your fingers sticky and don’t require a napkin.

I had the opportunity to sample these great snacks, thanks to the great people at Sprinkles Custom Cakes, based in Orlando, FL, who sent an assortment for my husband and I to sample. I’m a fussy dessert eater – I hate dry cakes, and I’ve developed a system for eating slices of cake so that I don’t wind up with too much, or too little frosting on each bite. That said, I was thoroughly pleased with the package that arrived at my condo this last week, and my husband and I quickly got to work reviewing our samples, making our way through the 6 pops that we had to choose from.

Looking at the overall aesthetic of the pops, while they are great for children’s events – birthdays, summer picnics or family reunions – they’re also very attractive for grown-up get togethers – from birthdays to cocktail parties, holiday parties or family get-togethers. The one thing I’d be curious to see is how to best display these tasty treats – since they have very narrow handle bases that prevent them from standing on their own. As a creative type, I can see a number of solutions, from decorated blocks of styrofoam to vases, depending on the number you order.

Right now, Sprinkles offers four flavors of cake shooters:

*Yellow Raspberry Swirl: swirled into the mix are cream cheese filling and icing
*Piña Colada: taste the tropics with this mix of vanilla Bavarian cream, pineapple filling, coconut filling and icing
*OMG: that’s what you’ll be saying when you put this delicious combination of raspberry swirl and chocolate buttercream icing
*Sprinkles Signature: this classic creation features vanilla Bavarian cream and white icing

Don’t live in Florida? Don’t worry! Sprinkles ships their cakes nationwide via 2nd Day Air, and they arrive with freeze packs to ensure that your frosting doesn’t melt and that your cake doesn’t spoil. The cake shooters are also comparably priced with gourmet cupcake bakeries – costing $3 for an individual shooter and $36 for a bakers’ dozen.

The cakery is open for orders Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 5: p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information or to order your own cake shooters (or cupcakes, or custom cakes), visit www.sprinklescakes.net.

Disclosure: I received a sample package of cake shooters to taste and review, but was not compensated in any other way. The thoughts expressed in this review are mine and mine alone.

Kodak Playsport Waterproof Video Camera

Kodak has released their latest pocket video cam, the Kodak Playsport Waterproof Video Camera, which retails for about $150. I would love the opportunity to take this baby for a test run – given its apparently good ratings for being sturdy and waterproof and my water-filled lifestyle. It certainly would have been helpful to have such a cam when my awesome Coolpix took a swim after hubby jumped off a boat with it in his pocket after a day at Peanut Island.

For now – I’m taking the early critics’ word for it, and giving you a quick overview of the specs for this cam, which claims being waterproof to 10 feet, and, according to critics, has held up well against the range of torture tests that tech bloggers can imagine and create. I don’t know that I’ll be throwing my video camera against a brick wall in the near future, but knowing that it withstood that throw gives me the peace of mind that it would, say, survive my five year old niece dropping it.

Features:

  • 1080p, 720p (30/60), VGA video modes, 5MP stills
  • Waterproof to 10ft
  • It doesn’t say shockproof exactly, but it survived a couple throws

2″ LCD screen

Going Green With Zuvo Water

I’m not going to pretend I’m the most eco-conscious gal out there, but I do make my efforts. However, one of the eco-sins I’m most often guilty of is drinking bottle after bottle of spring water. I do recycle, but there are still energy and other costs to consider. Brita and other filters never appealed to me, and the thought of drinking tap water really does creep me out (I travel a lot for work, so I swear by bottled water when I’m on the go – especially after one night in a Manhattan hotel when I decided I’d just fill a glass with tap water rather than take the elevator downstairs to the vending machine in the middle of the night – BIG mistake!).

So, when I heard about Zuvo water, I was thrilled. Some information on the product from its makers:

Winner of the Summer 2009, Parent Tested/Parent Approved Award, the Zuvo Water Purator is a new point-of-use water treatment system that is not only more cost effective than pitcher filters or bottled water, but also helps people reduce waste and limit the environmental impact of bottled water. This compact, chemical-free water system attaches to a standard kitchen faucet or connects in-line with plumbing under the sink.  Using a patented 5-step puration process, the Zuvo Water Purator mimics nature’s water cleansing process by exposing tap water to UV light and ozone, creating a harmful environment for water-borne bacteria and microorganisms, while trapping particles and dissolved solids in a carbon filter. This process not only preserves the valuable mineral content in the water, but it reduces bad tastes, potentially unhealthy contaminants, and cuts down waste.

SheBlogs.org is currently hosting a contest for the filtration systems, and I’d love to throw my hat into the ring to win one. However, even if I don’t, I think that the investment is worth checking into. Even though I rent, it looks like the system is compact enough for me to take with me when I move.

Check out more on Zuvo at http://zuvowater.com.

Smoking Everywhere – And Nowhere

I’m a smoker. I have been for years. Every time I have tried to quit, something has happened that’s gotten me started back up (Since my last attempt, I’ve said I would never quit again, so there would be no more major catastrophes in my life). However, today while walking through the local mall, I came across the Smoking Everywhere e-Cigarette, and I think this may be the tool that finally helps me kick the nasty habit that’s left me sore, more susceptible to colds and bronchitis, and with the beginnings of smoker’s cough – not to mention with a car that smells like cigarettes and clothes that do, too.

Today is Day One. I smoked my last cigarette about three hours ago, and my new e-cigarette is currently on the charger. I was told it would take about an hour to full recharge and be ready for use.

The kit was pricey – my boyfriend and I got the two kit special, so we each spent about $85 on it (regularly $100). Cartridge refills cost $10, and each comes with five tips – each of which is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. That means, instead of spending $7 on a pack, I’m down to spending $2. I started with the high nicotine cartridges, but every flavor (including the strawberry, coffee, and other novelty flavors) comes in high, medium, low, and no nicotine, making it easy to step down my intake, and, hopefully, quit altogether someday. I’ll be revisiting this product regularly, updating everyone on my progress as I commit to quitting. If it works, it’ll be the best $100 I’ve ever spent. Wish me luck!
