This Mother’s Day, Just Say No

A few years ago, I started having some “women’s problems.” After the scariest series of misdiagnoses that left me wondering what the hell the Florida health system was all about, I was told that I’d likely have a hard time with any pregnancies because of uterine fibroids and unusual vascularization that was causing me tremendous pain and bleeding.

Fast forward to St. Patrick’s Day, 2011. After feeling sick for several days and spending more time in the bathroom than I ever have, I decided to get a pregnancy test. My husband and I weren’t planing a baby, but I had ruled out other possibilities. What I got was the best surprise I could have wished for: I was expecting.

Spring Resolutions?

I absolutely hate New Year’s Resolutions. Those grandiose promises we make ourselves when we are full of champagne and sentiment never seem to make it past the following morning’s hangover (except, perhaps, that resolution you make to never drink again, which may last a few days – depending on the severity of said aches). However, given my current quest to simplify my over-stressed, over-committed life, this PR pitch caught my attention. While my own quest for change involves cutting out the proverbial fat of overcommitments and being forced into commitments that offer me zero benefit while piling on the work hours, I found some of these “resolutions” interesting. Maybe with all of the extra time I’ll be saving, I’ll have time to expand my own vocabulary, read more or enjoy some more movies.

Live Tree Buying Guide

Oh tannenbaum, oh tannenbaum, how lovely is thy tax situation.

Less than 24 hours after the Department of Agriculture announced they were slapping a 15-cents per tree tax on Christmas tree growers, the Obama administration backed off on the plan. The idea, hatched by the tree growers themselves was to fund a promotional push similar to the successful “Got Milk?” campaign from dairy producers.

Home Makeovers 101: Nursery Makeover, Part 2

Picking The Furniture

I shopped around quite a bit before settling on a bedroom set for the baby – for a number of reasons. Baby furniture can be VERY pricey, and quality and safety can vary wildly. I wanted furniture that was aesthetically pleasing, safe, and secure for the baby without breaking my budget on a crib. That’s when a fellow mom shared with me the ultimate secret to baby furniture shopping that sent me straight into Babies R Us for all of my furniture: the 20% off coupon.

I ended up going with a lifetime crib – a crib that converts from crib to toddler bed, to day bed, to full sized bed. Even if my son is sick of his bed by the time he’s a teen (I had the same bed from the time I was a little girl until I graduated from college, so budget will trump tantrum if need be), a lifetime crib will last much longer into a child’s life than a regular crib, and the cost difference isn’t that great. You can find regular cribs in the $200+ range, and lifetime cribs in the $250+ range.

Rockin’ Cocktails To Get You In The Holiday Spirit

The holiday season is in full swing and radio stations all over the country have changed their tunes.

Arguably the best part of the holiday season is its music, and Deussen Global has sent me some rockin’ cocktail recipes, inspired by the popular songs DJs will be playing to get listeners in the holiday spirit! Enjoy!

You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch by Thurl Ravenscroft

It’s December and you’re not feeling the holiday spirit yet. Mr. Grinch would be proud. Make this simple cocktail that features Lucid Absinthe and maybe your tune will change.

  • 1 1/2 oz. Midori® Melon Liqueur
  • Splash of ginger ale
  • 2-3 lime wedges
  • 1 lime

In a rocks glass, muddle 2 lime wedges. Add ice, Midori Melon Liqueur and Lucid Absinthe. Shake vigorously and return to rocks glass. Add ginger ale and garnish with a lime spiral.

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Fresh nutmeg for garnish

Instructions: In an Irish coffee mug, add boiling water, rum, and top with a small slice of butter. Stir with cinnamon stick and garnish with fresh nutmeg.

To make your own home-spiced, Flor de Caña rum:
Take 2 oz. Flor de Caña and pour into a mason jar.

Add your favorite spices.
Cover and let sit for 24 hours.
Taste the rum daily and adjust accordingly.
