Hi-Tech Romance: Finding Mr. Right This Holiday Season

I met my husband thanks to technology. OK, so it wasn’t online dating or a mobile app, but rather a Web 2.0 tradeshow that found us both catching some fresh air outside an afterparty club, and a number of additional shows in the months following that led us to continued encounters (he lived more than 3,000 miles away at the time – talk about a LONG distance relationship!). For others, fate hasn’t been quite as kind, and with the holiday season coming up, we’re all looking for Mr. Right (or Mr. Right For Now) to share in holiday parties, cozy fireside chats and to kiss as we ring in the new year. What if Mrs. or Mr. Right were only a simple click of the mobile phone away? To help hopeless romantics across the country, mobile app expert, Simon Buckingham, CEO of Appitalism (the mobile superstore) has created a list of top mobile apps to help find that holiday love everyone is looking for.

Allay Patch Gets My Five Stars

If you’re like me, that time of the month is a terror not only for me, but for my poor husband, who spends the days leading up to it hiding in his office and going out of his way not to cross my path. I can’t particularly help being a terror – as a PMDD sufferer, I face everything from extreme mood swings to God-awful hot flashes, migraines that leave me crippled and hiding in my bedroom, shades drawn and all noise-making items as far from me as possible. Worst of all, perhaps, are the cramps I get that leave me absolutely bed-ridden, sometimes for days.

In the past, this has meant missed work, missed activities, and the need to plan every activity of my life around my monthly visitor. One OB/GYN I went to more than a decade ago explained to my mother and I that the cramps I feel are more close in intensity to early labor pains than to normal cramps. He laughed and said that the “bright side” was that when I was old enough to have kids (I was 15 at the time) I wouldn’t be in as much relative pain as other women because I knew what the sensation felt like. I wanted to strangle him, even then. Seriously – I’d trade the WORST labor pains once or twice in my life over early labor pains EVERY month for all of my child-bearing years.

But I digress. Just as most of the advice I’ve gotten over the years has been completely unhelpful and ineffective – I’ve tried everything from yoga and exercise to extreme diet modification, pain killers, herbal supplements, and still I spend time every month in bed, choking down 1000 mg of Ibuprofen (doctor prescribed for the pain!) and trying to knock myself out so that I can try to sleep through it. Hot pads help – and I’ve had some success with deep tissue massage (most likely because of the heated massage table). When I got an offer to review the Allay Patch, I was all ears.

What Is The Allay Patch?

Developed by doctors, the Allay Patch is a drug-free menstrual pain therapy system. The Allay Patch hides discretely beneath your clothing and provides a gentle, therapeutic energy wave pulse that will help reduce inflammation and alleviate menstrual cramps, pain and discomfort.

The Allay Patch contains a hypoallergenic, biodegradable and soft cover that will allow you to wear it anywhere comfortable and completely hidden. Each Allay Patch can be used for approximately 3 or more menstrual cycles with a guaranteed 90 day menstrual relief.

Don’t let your menstrual cycle slow you down and cause you pain and discomfort. Get the drug-free relief you seek today with Allay Patch.

Allay Patch Features:

  • Discreet and comfortable
  • Developed by doctors and proven to work
  • Safe and effective relief
  • Up to a 73% reduction in menstrual pain
  • 30-day risk-free money back guarantee

The Allay Patch Includes:

  • Microprocessor Controller
  • Hypoallergenic Allay
  • Water-thin Micro Battery
  • Product Sleeves

Did It Work?

The Allay Patch wasn’t an immediate fix for me, like the hot pad or Ibuprofen I’m used to (and really, neither of those is immediate or a “fix”). However, after about 30 – 45 minutes, I could feel the patch starting to work, cramps starting to ease, and after about 2 hours, I was able to get up and get on with my day. Mind you – the delay may be because I don’t suffer from PMS – and because PMDD is much more severe, I can imagine that someone suffering from PMS would experience much quicker results.

On any given month, I typically spend anywhere from 8 – 12 hours in bed in extreme pain. I’ve used the patch twice with similar results – after less than 2 hours, I was able to get up, move around, and be on with my day.

Don’t Let Drunk Facebooking Happen To You!

Very rarely does a pitch come through my inbox that stands out as much as the one I received from Social Media Sobriety Test, so when I received this gem, I knew I was going to have to check out the website. The company provides a new free browser extension that is claimed to be the “ultimate bad idea protector,” which can be downloaded at www.socialmediasobrietytest.com. In their words:

The Social Media Sobriety Test  is a keyboard/mouse-based social-media blocker that prevents “under-the-influence” posting on sites including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and Tumblr, as well as custom URLs (like blogs) and/or web-based email accounts such as Gmail or Hotmail.  Users can customize which sites they wish to block and at which hours of the night (and following day) are the most personally vulnerable.    For access to their social media, the consumer has to pass one of a variety of randomly selected sobriety tests such as “drag your mouse in a straight line,” “type the alphabet backwards,” or “follow the finger.”

The Social Media Sobriety Test is the concept of Webroot, a leading provider of Internet security for consumers and businesses worldwide, and TDA Advertising & Design, a full-service advertising and design agency.

“We’re working with Webroot to offer this as a public service to anyone who enjoys beer, wine or spirits but doesn’t enjoy the over-sharing that often accompanies one too many,” says Jeremy Seibold, Associate Creative Director at TDA Advertising & Design, in commenting about the introduction of the Social Media Sobriety Test.  “In the old days, all you had to worry about was drunk dialing – a randomly placed call to an ex was certainly embarrassing but it was limited to him/her and maybe a few friends.  Today, the consequences of a stupid blog post or an ill-advised photo can be instantaneously spread around the globe.    It’s our hope the Sobriety Test will come to the aid of all who are in need of its protection.”

I checked out the site and downloaded the extension, and I think this is one of the most clever apps I’ve come across in awhile. While I typically don’t access my laptop after having a few cocktails, I can see why it would be a useful guard against posting TMI or embarrassing photos after a night out. Now if only they’d come up with an iPhone app that would stop me from making phone calls or sending text messages after a late night out…are you listening, Webroot?

I’m Listed!

After blogging for about a year, I’m excited to announce that I’ve been listed in my first “media database.” Yesterday, I received an email from Cision (which runs MediaSource, a press database for PR pros) saying:

Your I’m No June Cleaver blog caught our attention and we have added it to our online database. The listing is free of charge and our clients are communications professionals who want to find the best-suited bloggers to send topical, relevant press materials to.

I don’t fall into that category of bloggers that complains about PR spam and junk emails. I’m excited for my first unsolicited press release, and hope to work with some great companies (some of the best are the ones you’ve never heard of and wouldn’t have gone looking for – which is one of the joys of being a product reviewer). Products like Smelly Washer (I would never have thought to go look for something that would keep my washing machine smelling nice…didn’t that it could smell nice, and had no idea that such a product existed) and my new light skin peel from Natural Skin Shop are fantastic, and now that I have them, I couldn’t imagine being without them. BUT, I never would have gone out on my own to look for them.

I’ve worked with some eager and some standoff-ish PR pros over the last decade, both in my life as a “real journalist” and now in my life as a blogger. The one thing I definitely notice is, as a journalist in a newsroom, I may have tested a product for a short period (enough to get a sense of its function and write an honest review) and then move on to the next item so that I could fill my quota of 6 – 8 products a week for our product page (on top of my other writing responsibilities). By the following week, I’d forgotten half the products I’d reviewed.

As a blogger, I have the item in question in my home. I don’t use it momentarily and turn it over to some newsroom gatekeeper who adds it to a pile of other product samples so they can either be donated or sold at the end of the year. You may call it compensation (but I always disclose when I receive product for review), but I call it locking in a consumer. About half the time, when I get a free product sample or service in exchange for review, I’m back again buying the same thing a week, month, or quarter later, when I run out, can afford the splurge, or have a need for it again. And because I get to REALLY sample the products I’m reviewing, I also develop a brand loyalty and a dependency on that product. When my friends come over, they see my new detergent, or my new skincare/makeup products. They sure as hell know where my clothes came from, and they’re going to go out and shop too – and women take product advice from friends SERIOUSLY. Forget that old cliche about not wearing the same thing as your friends. I know at least two of my gal pals have gone out and purchased some amazingly hot item that they saw me wearing. But I digress.

As I mentioned previously – I’m listed. I feel a sense of accomplishment, like now I can really call myself a “blogger,” or like I’m now really a member of the media, because a third party (who isn’t my husband or friends and who is free to offer honest feedback), felt that I was worth promoting to the masses and endorsing to PR pros by saying, “Yep – she’s legit, you can trust her with your product samples and press releases.” So today, I say thank you Cision – you’ve made my week! Oh, and before I forget, check out my listing!

Geared toward twenty-something women with urban tastes. Coverage includes dining and wine, entertainment, fashion, beauty, personal health, home and travel. Additionally features profiles and reviews of products, services and websites.

The fundamentals of working with bloggers are the same as with traditional journalists at traditional media outlets: respect their schedules; take time to read their material to learn their interests; and only contact them if/when they want to be contacted. You will also find that if a blogger is a journalist for another outlet(s), Cision tracks their contact preferences there as well.

The outlet offers RSS (Really Simple Syndication).

Archos 9 Tablet PC Review

Archos 9 review

The iPad gets all the buzz, but there are a few other tablets on the market that are worth looking at. I’m writing this on a Macbook, which is sitting next to my iPhone, so I may be a bit biased – but let’s take a look at the Archos 9 PC Tablet.

Overall, the device seems to be average when compared to the iPad (which I’ve had the chance to tinker with a few times, but never had the pleasure of reviewing in-depth – ahem, Apple PR pros). Archos is well known, and generally well-reputed for its portable media player devices, which is where I expected the Archos 9 PC Tablet to show strength/value.

Unfortunately, the device was nothing more than mediocre, as either a tablet PC or handheld media viewing device. The CPU – a 1.1 GHz Intel Atom Z510 – was frustratingly slugging, which made testing video viewing aggravating, and the touch screen (perhaps the one I was test-driving wasn’t properly calibrated?) seemed less than accurate/responsive. I felt like I was Ellen trying to send a text on an iPhone, and even using the dummy stylus I had to press harder than I’m used to in order to get a response from the device.

The Archos 9 does have some benefits: you can run Firefox, play flash video (albeit slowly and with lots of interruptions), and you’re not limited to Apple’s approved application list. However, when comparing price and value (Archos costs $549 to iPad’s $499), the iPad – from my sadly limited tinkering time – definitely comes out on top.

Zune HD 64gb Review

Even though I wasn’t one of the five lucky recipients of the Microsoft Zune at September’s TechCrunch50 conference, I am excited to report that ,as seen on several tech blogs, Microsoft has just announced the Zune HD 64 GB. The device will go on sale on April 12, and retain for $349.99. From the press release:

In addition to introducing the new 64GB capacity, we are also reducing the prices of the 16GB and 32GB devices. Starting today, new price lists are being distributed bringing the estimated retail price (ERP) for the Zune 16GB device to $199.99 and the Zune HD 32GB device to $269.99.

With its OLED multi-touch screen, built-in HD radio, HD video out capabilities and Internet browser, Zune HD is a full-function media player which has received accolades from press and consumers. We’ve also announced details of an upcoming firmware update which will add even more features to the device, such as Smart DJ auto-playlists capability directly on the Zune HD, ability to browse, stream and acquire music from Zune Marketplace on your TV (while the device is connected to a TV set through the A/V dock) and expanded codec support allowing users to play more video formats natively from the device.

You can buy it here.

Kodak Playsport Waterproof Video Camera

Kodak has released their latest pocket video cam, the Kodak Playsport Waterproof Video Camera, which retails for about $150. I would love the opportunity to take this baby for a test run – given its apparently good ratings for being sturdy and waterproof and my water-filled lifestyle. It certainly would have been helpful to have such a cam when my awesome Coolpix took a swim after hubby jumped off a boat with it in his pocket after a day at Peanut Island.

For now – I’m taking the early critics’ word for it, and giving you a quick overview of the specs for this cam, which claims being waterproof to 10 feet, and, according to critics, has held up well against the range of torture tests that tech bloggers can imagine and create. I don’t know that I’ll be throwing my video camera against a brick wall in the near future, but knowing that it withstood that throw gives me the peace of mind that it would, say, survive my five year old niece dropping it.

Features:

  • 1080p, 720p (30/60), VGA video modes, 5MP stills
  • Waterproof to 10ft
  • It doesn’t say shockproof exactly, but it survived a couple throws

2″ LCD screen

iPhone Fridge Magnets

I read in a recent issue of Wired Magazine that, in a series of studies, Apple fans’ brains reacted much more intensely to mentions of their beloved company, its fearless leaders, and its game-changing products than devout Christians’ brains reacted to religious references.

It’s no wonder, then, that I – a woman who absolutely hates refrigerator magnets (I have this horrible OCD toward my fridge – I have special polish for the stainless steel and I hate when it gets finger prints – the idea of having cutesy magnets doesn’t jibe with my aesthetic sensibilities) – still felt the compulsion to buy these iPhone fridge magnets.

They are so cute.  That’s about all they are, and all you need to know.  They cost 13 bucks and you can buy them here.

Asus Cine5 Preview

Living in a condo, one of the things that you quickly have to adjust to is: every inch matters. Bulky furniture, extra dishes, every item in the condo has to be carefully weighed to avoid having an over-cluttered, claustrophobic, environment. That’s why, when I heard of the announcement of the Asus Cine5, I as thrilled. One of my evil vices is watching TV and movies in bed, and now that I’ve got my new BlueRay, I could use some real sound to compensate for my outdated TV, which I have yet to update.

Surround sound systems can be tricky in bedrooms, particularly when you’re renting and the floors are hardwood. Economical systems have wires that have to be hidden, and wireless units are often too pricey for use. Surround sound bars are typically sized for a 42 inch or larger set.

Thankfully, Asus had a product that solved my problem. The Cine5 PC speaker, which works with TV sets of all sizes, as well as computers, claims that it accurately recreates the surround sound experience in a small package. The system, which is around 15 inches long, has five speakers, and even features a headphone jack – which is perfect for use with computers or late-night TV viewing after the hubby has gone to bed (I still can’t get away with it, because I can’t adjust my TV screen’s brightness, and the light bothers him).

From the press release:

the ASUS Cine5 PC speaker which provides accurate 5-channel surround sound in personalized spaces such as study rooms. With its all-in-one design, the Cine5 delivers realistic and dynamic surround sound to satisfy consummate gamers and personal entertainment users. To deliver exceptionally full sound from a compact form factor, ASUS drew on its expertise in high-performance audio cards during the development.

I’m anxious to see when the speaker will go on sale, and what its price will eventually be.
