If you haven’t already heard, cupcakes are making a MAJOR comeback. And I’m not talking about your Duncan Hines box mix with tub frosting. Today’s cupcakes are miniature works of art – carefully crafted to look like elegant cakes, and served up in a myriad of flavors that makes Baskin Robbins seem to have a limited selection.
In South Florida, the options for these couture treats is almost limitless – I’ve sampled the fare from at least a dozen cupcake shops from West Palm to Ft. Lauderdale. One of my favorites, both from its fare and from its completely retro chic design, is Cupcake Couture on Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach. Walking into the store alone makes you smile – the interior is decked out in bold colors and fancy design, with candy-coated murals and “dual oven” television sets playing Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (I love the original – but perhaps the only thing that could have made the experience better was an update to Johnny Depp’s version).
The cupcake flavors are just as couture as the design – each with its own designer flavor, from Jimmy Choo-colate (double chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting and mini chocolate chip trim) to Donatella Vanilla (vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting), with a range of creative flavors that includes Jean Paul Peanutier (chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting), Dolce & Banana (light banana cake with banana buttercream frosting), and Apple Kors (apple walnut cake with caramel buttercream frosting). Even the most basic cupcakes have amazing flavor – the cakes aren’t dry and the frosting is rich and smooth and absolutely terrible for my figure, but delicious enough for me not to care.
At $4 a cupcake, they’re right around the average price for a couture cupcake in South Florida, which is perfect for a little self-indulgence or to let someone know you care. It’s a great spot to take kids, or even as a sweet first date (you can enjoy an entire menu of delicious items, from coffees and teas to tasty gelatos). And with the location – it makes for a great place to meet the girls before an afternoon of shopping or gallery hopping, or even as a great way to end an afternoon at the beach!
